In the first hours of the attack the terrorists stormed the army bases along the border and the security posts in the area. Many soldiers, men and women, were killed and others were taken to Gaza as hostages. At the Nahal Oz base 53 soldiers and officers were killed, and seven female surveillance soldiers were abducted and taken to Gaza.
